Your Questions and Answers About Hosting

What about those free web hosting services?
Forget them. There's no such thing as good free web hosting. You'll be stuck with pathetically slow bandwith and no support. Plus you'll have ads stuck on your site that earn your host money, not you. Remember, you get what you pay for.

What is Fantastico?
Fantastico is a neat little script installer that many hosts offer. It automatically installs open source programs like blogs, forums, photo albums, surveys, shopping carts and content management systems like Wordpress or Joomla. While not essential, Fantastico definitely makes life easier.

Do I need a dedicated server?
Shared hosting plans are fine for most websites. But if you have a site that grows too large or has special requirements that shared plans can't meet you may want to consider upgrading to a dedicated server. The server and its resources are yours alone, but expect to pay a couple hundred dollars a month. Each of the hosts mentioned in my webhost comparison can also provide dedicated servers.

Webhost Comparison - Webhost Reviews

Choosing a web hosting company is no easy matter. There's so many hosting services to choose from, it can be hard to figure out which is best for you.

To help narrow down your choice, I've created this short list of the highest quality web site hosting services around. There really isn't one "best" web host. It really depends on what you need and which host can best provide that for you.

Over the last 3 years I've created dozens of websites and I've used many different internet web site hosting services. In my webhost reviews below I give you the best I've found so far.

Webhost Reviews

Hostgator gets my top rating for both quality and quantity of services provided. I love everything about them. You get outstanding reliability and an amazing array of features for rock bottom prices. Packages start at just $6.95 per month, but I recommend going for the $9.95 "Baby Gator" package which lets you host unlimited domains.

Key features include:

  • No contract - pay as you go
  • 24/7 support
  • Unlimited domains
  • 64 free website templates
  • cPanel with Fantastico
  • SiteStudio site builder
  • Easy to install third party software including WordPress, Joomla, Drupal, blogs, forums, shopping carts, and more.
  • Unlimited MySQL databases
  • Your choice of shopping carts

Final Verdict:
It's amazing they can offer such incredible service for such a low price. Unlimited domains let you build as many sites as you want. And one-click software installation makes setup a breeze. With no lengthy contract to sign, Hostgator edges out the competition and grabs the top spot in my ranking.

Bluehost.com - $6.95 Web Hosting

Bluehost is just about equal to Hostgator in what you get, and the price is actually a little cheaper at just $6.95 for unlimited domains.

Key features include:

  • Free domain name
  • 24 hour live support
  • Fantastico (one-click installation of popular scripts)
  • Drag and drop sitebuilder
  • Excellent choice of shopping carts
  • $50 free Yahoo Search Marketing credits
  • $30 free Google Adwords credits

Final Verdict:
Bluehost offers outstanding reliability and nearly as many features as Hostgator, and for a better price. With the easy to use sitebuilder, even the biggest technophobes can build professional looking sites.

iPowerweb offers reliability and functionality starting and $7.95 per month. One free domain name is included, and you can host up to 6 add-on domains at no extra charge.

Key features include:

  • Free domain name
  • Free Dynamic Content (easily add news, sports scores, stock quotes, etc. to your site)
  • 24 hour support
  • Easy to use sitebuilder
  • Several shopping carts to choose from
  • $50 free Yahoo Search Marketing credits
  • $30 free Google Adwords credits

Final Verdict:
iPowerweb has two downsides to me. First, you have to sign a 12-month contract to avoid paying a setup fee. If you don't mind committing for a year that won't be a problem. Second, they don't offer Fantastico, so there's a little more work involved in setting up certain scripts and software. Other than that, I find iPowerweb very reliable with a nice array of features.

Get up to $900 in Free Software with 1&1 Hosting!

1and1 currently hosts this site, which proves I mean what I say (I have lots of small sites and they're spread over a few different hosts). You can host up to 20 sites for just $3.99 a month, but I recommend upgrading to the $9.99 package which lets you host 100 sites and offers much more functionality.

Key features include:

  • 3 free domain names
  • Host up to 100 sites
  • Dynamic Site Creator
  • 90 day guarantee
  • 24 hour support
  • $100 Microsoft Adcenter credits
  • $50 Google Adwords credits
  • $50 Yahoo Search Marketing credits

Final Verdict:
1and1 is an up and coming host that has added many new features in recent months. I'd like to see them add cPanel and Fantastico next. Also, I've tried to install a few third party scripts that just didn't work on 1and1's servers, but when I installed them with Hostgator they worked fine. Something to keep in mind if you're the "hands on" type like me.
